Freedom
Partners leaves Microsoft for Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations
"Freedom Partners is a network of car dealerships in Vermont.
Freedom IT director Chip Kaupp doesn't know one Linux distribution
from another, but he doesn't need to. Freedom Partners' Web sites
and its company intranet run on the Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations server appliance. Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations is
a custom variation of Linux that includes Web, email, printing,
security, and backup utilities, which is administered through a
browser-based GUI. It comes in an easy-to-install package, or
preinstalled on its own server hardware."
''"We wanted to have VPNs available for our owners and managers,"
Kaupp says. "I talked to the VAR from whom I was buying equipment,
and he recommended Linux," in the form of a Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations server. It seemed
to provide the answers Kaupp was looking for. With Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations, Kaupp
found he was able to block employees' access to inappropriate Web
sites by allowing access only to sites on the "approved" list. Also,
by implementing a point-to-point VPN, Kaupp was able to replace the
T-1 service and save Freedom several hundred dollars a month.''

"The ease of use of deploying Sage Accpac ERP on Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations is historic
and unparalleled. It's truly a worry-free, lower-cost alternative to
Microsoft server infrastructure, requiring little or no technical
expertise for Sage Accpac users. Our business partners and clients

Vendors say all
companies can have systems that manage themselves
"Autonomic computing allows IT departments to extend their
budgets further," Craig says. "Instead of applying resources to
solve basic problems, they'll have more resources to roll out new
systems, or improve business processes."
Net Integration Technologies is targeting SMBs with its autonomic
computing solutions built on top of the Linux operating system, says
Ozzy Papic, founder and CEO. In December 2005, Net Integration
announced an alliance with ERP vendor Sage Software under which
Sage's Accpac ERP system is offered on Net Integration's Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations
platform.

The Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations
system philosophy: Computer, heal thyself
Self-healing computing could be just what the doctor ordered for
small businesses.
Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations, described as an "autonomic server operating system," comes
with a made-in-Canada label. Developed by Net Integration
Technologies Inc. of Markham, Ont., the autonomic part of Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations has
computing functions such as self-management, self-configuration,
self-optimization and the aforementioned self-healing capabilities
-- all part of a Linux-based system specifically designed for small
businesses.
"When things do fail or have a hiccup, the autonomic engine [in
Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations] is designed to go and deal with these problems," says Ozzy
Papic, chief executive officer of Net Integration Technologies.
"It's best described as a large number of self-regulating subsystems
that can do logical and smart things in correcting conditions, even
those that haven't been encountered before."

Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations automates
Linux OS
"Irrespective of their size, businesses are always looking for
robust systems that do not crash, have reliable backup facilities,
and utilize technology that is not complicated for the end-user. Net
Integration Technologies (NITI) says it has a solution for this.
The company’s product, Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations, a Linux-based OS, offers users an
operating system with self-healing and self-maintaining
capabilities. Due to its automatic capabilities, it can eliminate
the added cost of having a Linux expert oversee its operation. The
company recently obtained the ‘Ready for IBM DB2 software for Linux’
designation for Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations Application Edition (AE)."

Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations Server
Suits 'One-Person IT Department'
"Recently, Standard Air and Lite, an HVAC wholesaler in
Pennsylvania, moved its Web presence and email software from a Sun
Cobalt Qube 3 server appliance to a Linux-based Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations server. The
company is so satisfied with the new system's reliability that it is
considering adding an intranet and hosting it on another Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations
machine."
"So far, Palmer is happy with the switch. "It's much less expensive
to keep it supported. With the previous system, I had to pay a lot
of support charges to DataMatrix." She's also found the Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations system
is much easier for someone with limited command line interface
experience. "I don't need to get the Linux command book out," Palmer
says. "I'm a one-person IT department, and as much as I love to
learn, there's just not enough time in the day. I had to do a little
bit more of that on the Cobalt."

Fortune Small
Business: Smooth Sailing
"The server runs net integration's Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations, a Linux-based operating
system that uses self-regulating or "autonomic" technology to fix
software problems before they crash the network. Pioneered by IBM
researchers and inspired by the human nervous system, which
regulates basic bodily functions such as breathing and blood
pressure without conscious intervention, autonomic software "aims to
improve a company's IT environment by focusing on four key areas:
self-configuring, self-healing, self-managing, and self-protecting,"
says Dave Bartlett, vice president for autonomic computing at IBM."
"Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations takes less than ten minutes to find previous versions of lost
or corrupted files. "Any server can back up your data, but it's all
for naught if it can't restore it," says Hoss, who estimates that
he's saving about $5,000 a year in backup costs. Best of all,
Freeport Launch's revenues have doubled in the past five years, to
about $5.5 million. Hoss attributes that gain partly to more
efficient IT."

Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations Linux Operating System -
Debate Between Open Source and Microsoft
"There is a new facet in the debate between
open source and Microsoft, pitting the flexibility of open source
against the tight integration of Microsoft technologies. One camp
claims that integration is the key for ease-of-use and consequent
cost-savings from reduced administration while the open source
advocates are preaching the virtues of flexibility.
Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations OS, a Linux distribution made by Net
Integration Technologies, may actually be able to assuage both
camps. Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations OS facilitates tight integration of network services
made possible by the flexibility of Linux open source architecture
to provide a comprehensive SMB solution. Net Integration
Technologies (www.nitix.com) is a developer of software and
networking hardware solutions that are based on their Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations Linux
operating system, which is geared toward helping small businesses
manage IT infrastructure."

Self-Aware
Servers
Wouldn't it be great if your complex server systems worked
like your own autonomic nervous system? Hiep Vuong thinks so.
"The main idea behind autonomous computing is based on the
autonomic nervous system of the human body. It looks after itself,
heals itself and is self-aware. We want to expand those concepts
into the computing world," says Vuong, who is chief technology
officer for Net Integration Technologies Inc. (www.nitix.com), a
Markham, Ontario, Canada-based developer of autonomic network
systems.

Net Integration Gets Into
Autonomics
Toronto-based networking vendor Net Integration Technologies
is venturing into the autonomic computing market, but with a twist.
The technology will be solely positioned in the small business
space and branch automation market. According to Malcolm Etchells,
vice president of overseas sales and customer service for Net
Integration, the company works closely with IBM and its autonomic
research lab. “They want to do autonomic computing on large
enterprise systems and that is a big challenge. There are more
servers and high complexity. And, I can tell you that autonomic
computing is not there for the enterprise, but in SMB we can apply
it in a sensible way,” he said.

IT Self-Service Gets a Boost . . .
His [Hiep
Vuong, Chief Technology Office at Net Integration Technologies Inc]
vision of true autonomous computing means, for example, that when IT
adds a server to a network, the machine automatically detects where
its resources will be best used, provisions itself, maintains
continuous awareness of its condition and network, and adjusts
itself accordingly. Vuong says Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations, as his company is called, is
proposing its UniConf open-source tool (www.open.nit.ca/wiki) as a
step toward true autonomous computing.

Beak Performance
Linux vendors down the years have been
very innovative in mirroring and building on Windows' successes and
attempting to eradicate its failures. Worldwide, as a function of
the open source mindset to innovate beyond boundaries, the process
is, too often, visibly Windows-conscious. For example, a Linux
appliance from Net Integration Technologies (www.nitix.com) packs an
amazing amount of services into a small box. Running the Nitix / IBM Lotus Foundations OS,
it includes built-in Web, e-mail, VPN and remote access servers, a
firewall and file and print services for Windows, Mac and Linux
networks.
